A page from the diary

My goodness! I had ideas about leadership even when I was not exactly teaching it! I was practising it at that point of time. I was reasonably good leader then. This is not just my judgement but many people endorsed the idea. Why then I left that very comfortable job? The question is who was comfortable? Everybody else except me! I never wanted to be a boss! I joined all India Radio, thinking that I will be a producer, doing creative work all through the life. I was having people like Bhradwaja in my view. They enjoyed their job! Of course the official rigmarole makes such people uncomfortable. Then there is compensation in the form of putting your creativity to best use. How many people in this world can throw their ideas on to the world like a media man does?
Then AIR has sucked! It literally chased me away!
Am I happy after that? Yes and No! It depends. If I had stayed there itself, I would have been a very different person. I do not have any complaints about that department even today. It is only people who make or break the institutions.

So, this was the day I chaired the Co-ordination meeting at Vizag. We all went to Simhachalam. I thought I did a mistake to visit a Vaishnavite temple in an official manner and dress. I asked God for some small favour. He never gave it to me! He had different plans for me. I welcomed it! No regrets!
I am used to take life as it comes!

Talking of temples I became aware of some terminology. I commented about the Tamil terms still in use in our households. They are transformed so very much that we ourselves do not recognise the fact that we follow Tamil culture. In fact some of our people hate Tamil and Tamilians.
Funny!

African folk tales

African Folk Tales

I found these stories in an unexpected book. written by genius by name Dr. Tirmala Ramachandra. The book is a collection of his articles on matters of literaturs and related things.

His other book Hampi to Harappa, of course in Telugu is an example of one writes an autobiography. He was a man of many things. A polyglot, journalist, linguist and more than anything a true blue researcher, that was Ramachandra. I don’t know if it would be naive to say that he was a clan man, and his original name was Ramachandra charya. That apart, I have a habit of keeping away from people if I am too very awe struck with their virtuosity. Francis Crick, Veena Balachander are some of the people from whom I kept a distance even though there were occasions to befriend them. Tirumala Ramachandra was another in that list. I have a belief that proximity robs off the element of awe.

Coming to the point, I found a book of articles Sri Ramachandra . it was a collection of articles he has written for various magazines and news papers. I found some very interesting facts and ideas in many articles there. I thought I can make use of some of the material for my blog. When I simply opened the book now, casually to see what is it that I can pick up, I stumbled on an article that I neglected earlier. The article is about African culture. A real polyglot Tirumala studied everything and anything that came his way. Here are a couple of stories that he narrated in the article, word by word.

More about Ramachandra sometime later!

Rabbit - Men

Moon called an insect once and said, “you go to the world of man, and tell thus. ‘I will die. I will live dying. If I die you will also die. You will live dying.’” The insect set on the journey and was going.

Soon a Rabbit accosted it. “Oh! Insect where are you going?” it said. It again asked “On what errand are you going?” “King Moon has sent me. I am going to the man world. I have to convey his message to them.” The insect narrated the matter in detail. “When do you reach man’s world? I can run fast. I will deliver the message to them. You go back!” said the rabbit and even before it could answer fled away.

On the way Rabbit forgot the detail of the message. On reaching man’s world, it met them and said, ‘King Moon sent me. He asked me to tell, “I will die and thus I perish. You will also die and totally perish.”’ It went back to the moon world and narrated the message that it gave to the men.

Moon was very angry. “I did not tell the insect like that! How can you tell something that I did not tell? How dare?” saying so, he threw a stick on to the face of the rabbit. Rabbit’s nose was slit into the middle. Since then only rabbits have a slit nose. But, people however still believe what the rabbit told them.

A page from the diary

9-02-00
I sound very nostalgic and not very much happy with the situations in my musings written long back. There is no better person to invite change than me. I have always been keeping ahead of times. There are not many from my class who are savvy with a computer or internet. This is only an example.
In many things, I have the reputation of being a mixture of both old and new. When Andhra Prabha weekly was looking for an editor with a modern approach, they very much stopped with my name. I remember them saying that Gopal is a man with his heart in the past and mind in the future. My tastes are equally distributes in all the time lines. Classical musicians like many others keep lamenting about the falling standards. I see it as change.
In this entry there are more than one thing to comment upon. On that day perhaps, as usual, I was thinking about many things at once.
I have written about keeping the mind clean.
I have also talked about the milk processing in the past. Yes. Old methods are a favourite subject of mine. No qualms on that.

Akka Kelavva, a haunting melody

Akka kelavva, a haunting melody

I was almost addicted to radio and was used to listening all kinds of things till late in the night. I owe my taste in music and languages to radio!
One night I happened to listen to this song.. I was ignorant about the Vachana Sahitya in Kannada and the information that these Vachanas are sung by great masters. Saivite saints, starting with Basaveswara wrote these Vachanas and they are profusely sung by classical vocalists Akka Mahdevi is another saint who wrote great Vachanas and her works are examples of bridal mysticism. It is a rare thing that free verse poetry existing at that time. They called them Vachanas and not poetry. It is also rare that they are sung to classical ragas. In Telugu there are Vachanams. I don’t know if any musical renditions are there for them.

I was looking for the song everywhere, but could not find it.
This ocean called internet made things easier and I could once again listen to the wonderful rendition of the Vachana by .

Mallikarjuna Mansoor, a master singer of Karnataka who has made Hindustani Music all the more enjoyable.
I was told that he used to ride pillion on bicycle to the Radio station in Dharawad to perform a concert. You look at him, and you will never think that this is the man who can mesmerize people with his song!

I am a life time fan of Mansoorji and the song Akka kelavva.
I can understand a little bit of Kannada no doubt. But, to understand the philosophy of these Vachanas I read a lot about them.
Ultimately it so happened that I had to write a review of a book of translations of Vachanas into my mother tongue, Telugu.
The translation was by a great poet Sri K. Siva Reddy who also happens to be a friend.

Here I bring you the translation.
The original idea appears very simple. But as you understand there is a lot to it that evades our simple imagination. It is a wonderful example of bridal mysticism, I feel.

Literature of any genre has to be understood and enjoyed just like one enjoys a song. If a particular work is available in both forms the enjoyment is much more.
To me, the Vachanas as the word itself means appear nit exactly meant for singing. But the scholars of music having seen the value in them, made them immortal by rendering them musically.

Oh! Sister listen, I have seen a dream
I have seen rice, beetle nut, Beetle leaf, Palmyra leaf and coconut
With little plaits and beautiful teeth,
I have seen the Gorava come home for alms
With exceeding lust i have followed him and took his hand,
After seeing Chenna Mallikarjuna, I have opened my eyes.

Thus goes the translation. But, when I listen to the song, I find that there is redundancy of words in the translated version. I know that the translators were not exactly experts in Kannada. One of them did not even know the language. This translation was done in a workshop where a lot of material was given to them. They have mostly depended on an interpreter. That is how there are differences. I have searched for the Kannada script of this particular item. I failed. The words that I found redundant are kept in parenthesis. I look for some information on the matter.
I am sure people with musical ear will enjoy the song wholeheartedly. Please listen to the song.

Enjoy Great Music!

Runanandalahari of Mullapudi

Happy Deepavali to all!!
Today I bring you selections from Mullapudi Venkata Ramana’s Runanandalahari.
I feel this is the best of humour in modern Telugu.
Can you believe Ramana Garu composing an impeccable poem in classical meter?
He has done it and done it so well that all the classical poets will wonder who is this?
This book under reference is about raising loans and not paying them back. He has adopted a classical style of narration wherein a story leads to another.
I have picked up one poem which is a parody to the famous poem of Potana in Bhagavatam.
The other two are stories in a language style that is not known to many these days.
There are tatacharla Kathalu and other such similar works. The language used in them is not very methodical and is funny in its own way. Read these stories. Unfortunately I cannot help those who cannot read Telugu. This proves that all the vernacular works cannot be translated. I am told that Kanyasulkam is translated. It must be as funny as the original because of the inadequacies in translation. Who can translate this kind of wonderfully native expression?
This sit eh poem! Potana salutes to the omnipotent and omnipresent god in a poem. Ramana Garu request loan from a person who is kind in this poem.

Long ago there was one Appadu. Because there cannot be two, there was one Appadu. He had a rich friend. Because of that he never had money. The friend out of obligation was giving a Varaha ( A coin) in loan. One day Appadu thought why not I ask him to give me a hundred Varahas. And he asked for them. The friend never had so much money and said the same. Since the obligation was also over he did not even give the usual one Varaha. That is the story. Sorry it is not said in as simple words that I could use. The expression is ancient and really interesting. Only those who can understand will enjoy it. Language and its use is as powerful as using ammunition!!

A story no one asked.
It goes thus.
No one asked what is the story. So it was narrated by itself. Fearing that all will ask for loan, a person called Runatilakudu ( all names in this book are related to loan. Appadu is about appu the loan in Telugu.) hid it in a pit in his backyard. It was stolen. Appanna who was denied loan a week back came there and laughed and said, if you gave me a loan, the money would not have been lost I would have repaid it to you, and laughed and went away.
The whole story is narrated in one unbroken sentence. This is an ancient style again. Humour is about not making ugly expression and talking banalities. Humour is something wonderful!

Happy Deepavali again!!

I was alone at home one of these evenings. Usually, I am alone all through the day! So are the evenings!! But, looks like this evening was different. After a long time, I thought, I will write something. Not that I am not writing these days. But this writing was different. I really do not know, if it qualifies to be called poetry! It happened with me. When I wrote poetry, I felt it was prosaic. when I wrote some serious prose, people who matter said, it is poetry!!
This is also like that!! These are my needs these days!! Most of the material on my site and blog happens to be old! A friend has mildly chided me for waht I wrote here on this same blog in one of the entries. I am sure I will not subscribe to many ideas that I had long back!
It happens with every one!
