గ్రేట్ వాల్ ఆఫ్ చైనా అంటే ఏమిటి?

క్రీస్తు పూర్వం మూడవ శతాబ్దంలో చైనావారు, దేశం ఉత్తర సరిహద్దు వెంట, కొండలను కలుపుతూ ఒక గోడను కట్టారు. గోడ నిజానికి నాడో పడిపోయింది. తర్వాత క్రీ. శ. 15, 16 శతాబ్దాలలో దేశానికి ఉత్తరంలోనే గానీ, మారిన సరిహద్దుల వెంట, మరో గోడ కట్టారు. ఈ కొత్తగోడ కూడా శిథిలమయింది. అక్కడక్కడ మాత్రం గోడ కొంత దూరం మిగిలి ఉంది. ఆ మిగిలిన గోడలను చూచి, పాతగోడలను గురించి చదివీ పడమటి దేశాల పర్యాటకులు ఇదేదో గొప్పగోడ అనుకుంటారు. వెళ్లేది అందరూ బెయిజింగ్ (పాతకాలపు పీకింగ్) కే గనుక, అక్కడ కొంత గోడ కనిపిస్తుంది గనుక, అందరూ లాంఛనంగా వెళ్లి ఆహా గ్రేట్ వాల్ అనుకుని, దాన్ని చూచి ఆనందించి వస్తున్నారు. చైనా వాళ్లు మాత్రం గోడ గొప్పదని అనుకోవడం లేదట

అయినా చైనా అనగానే, ప్రపంచంలో అందరికీ ముందు గుర్తుకు వచ్చేది గ్రేట్ వాల్ ఒకటే. అక్కడికి వెళ్లి అసలు విషయం చూచిన వాళ్లు చాలా నిరాశ పడతారు. చాలా మామూలుగా మట్టి రాళ్లు పేర్చి కట్టిన గోడ అది. అందరూ అనుకుంటున్నట్టు వేల సంవత్సరాలనాటిది కానే కాదు.

అంతరిక్షంలోకి వెళ్లి భూమిని చూస్తే, అంతా బొమ్మలా కనబడుతుందని తెలుసు. మనిషి కట్టిన కట్టడం ఒక్కటి కూడా అక్కడినుంచి కనబడదు. కానీ, ఈ ఒక్క గోడ మాత్రం అంతరిక్షం నుంచి కూడా కనబడుతుందని ఒకమాట ప్రపంచంలోకి వచ్చింది. అందుకు కారణం ఎవరనేది కూడా తెలియదు. తెలిసిన సంగతి ఒకటుంది. అదేమిటంటే, ఈ గోడ అంతరిక్షంనుంచి కనబడదని వ్యోమగాములే స్వయంగా చెప్పారు. గోడ ఒక వరుసగా కొంత దూరం ఉంటేగదా బురుజులున్నాయి. గోడల మధ్యన చాలా చోట్ల ఖాళీలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి. మొత్తానికి గోడ 2400 కిలోమీటర్ల పొడవు (ఖాళీలతో సహా) ఉందని లెక్క తేల్చారు. బెయిజింగ్ దగ్గర చాలా బాగున్నచోట గోడ ఎత్తు 7.6 మీటర్లు. వెడల్పు 9 మీటర్లు. అవును వెడల్పే ఎక్కువ. గోడ కిందభాగంలో వెడల్పుగా ఉండి రానురాను తగ్గుతుంది.

చైనా వారెవరూ ఈ గోడను గ్రేట్ వాల్ అనలేదు. చూడవచ్చినవారు అన్నారు గనుక ఆ పేరే నిలబడింది. 1912 లో రిపబ్లిక్ ఆఫ్ చైనాను స్థాపించిన సున్ యత్ సెన్ మాత్రం గోడ గురించి గొప్పగా చెప్పాడు.
What is Great Wall of China?

In the 3rd century BC Chinese people built a wall joining the hills in the northern frontier. That wall collapsed long ago. Later in the 15th and 16th centuries, another wall was built along the changed frontiers. Even the new wall remains only in ruins. It is intact in parts only here and there. Western travelers who read about the old walls and saw the remains of the new one imagined it to be a great one. Many of the tourists anyway go to Beijing or the old Peking, the capital. Nearby, there is a part of the wall intact. People as a ritual go there and enjoy seeing it and imagining it to be great!It is said however, that no Chinese ever considered that the wall is great!

Interestingly, it is the China Wall that comes to the mind first, for anyone who thinks of the country even today. But all those who go there in person and see the wall will sure be dissatisfied, it is said. It is a very simple wall built with rocks and mud arranged together. And it is not even thousands of years old as many would imagine!

We all know that the earth looks like a picture post card when viewed from the space. Not a single man made structure will be seen from there anyway! But, there is a word spread in the world that Great Wall of China can be seen from the space. No one knows who is responsible for the belief. One thing is known though! It is that the space travelers themselves have asserted the fact that the wall was never visible from there. It is after all not even there continuously for a good stretch! There are ramparts and voids in between. On the whole, the wall is 2400 KM long including the gaps. Near Beijing wher the wall is as good as it could be, it is 7.6 Mtrs in height. Width is 9 Mtrs. Yes, it is wider than higher! The wall is wider at the bottom and tapers up.

No Chinese ever called the wall Great! It is the visitors who said that. The name remained so. In 1912, Sun Yet Sen who established Chinese Republic however talked high of the wall!
