మన దేశంలో చాలా వస్తువులకు మనకు అర్థం కాని పేర్లు పెడతారు. అర్థం తెలిస్తే ఆ పేరు పెట్టిన ఔచిత్యం మరింత బాగా తెలుస్తుందేమో. మామూలు కార్లు ఉండగా సూమో అని ఒకటి వచ్చింది. అది చాలా పెద్ద ఆకారం గలది. మామూలుగా ఈ ప్రపంచంలో మల్లయుద్దం అనే కుస్తీ పోటీలు ఉంటాయి. అందులో బలంగలవారు పాల్గొంటారు. జపాను వారికి సూమో అనే ప్రత్యేక మల్లయుద్ధం ఉంటుంది. అందులో పెద్ద శరీరం గల యోధులు పాల్గొంటారు. అందుకే సూమో అంటే, పెద్ద ఆకారం అనే అర్థంలో వాడుకున్నారు మన దగ్గర.
జపానువారి మార్షల్ ఆర్ట్స్ లో ఒకానొక ప్రాచీన పద్ధతి సూమో. తోసుకోవడం, లాగడం, పట్టుకుని నెట్టడం తప్ప ఈ పోటీలో కొట్టుకోవడం ఉండదు. అన్ని కుస్తీలలో ఇదే పద్ధతే అయినా సూమో చాలా ప్రత్యేకంగా కనబడుతుంది. సూమో అనేది క్రీడ పేరు. అందులో పాల్గొంటున్న వారిని సూమోటోరి అంటారు. కారుకు కూడా ఈ పేరు పెడితే బాగుండేది. ఈ మాట ఏకవచనం, బహువచనం కూడా. వీరి ప్రత్యేకత, కనీసం 130 నుంటి, 200 ఇంకా ఎక్కు కిలోలు బరువు ఉండడం. బరువు పెరగడానికి వారు ప్రత్యేకమయిన ఆహారం తీసుకుని, ప్రత్యేకమయిన శిక్షణ పొందుతారు. శిక్షణ కోసం ప్రత్యేకంగా కేంద్రాలు ఉంటాయి.
మన దేశంలో కుస్తీలకుండే అఖాడాలలాగే, జపానులో మొత్తం 28 సుమోబేయా (సుమో బడులు) ఉన్నాయి. వాటిని గురువులుగా, అనుభవం గల మల్లయోధులే నడుపుతుంటారు. 15 ఏళ్ల వయసుగలవారు ఈ బడిలో చేరి, గట్టి శిక్షణ పొందుతారు. పోటీలో పాల్గొంటున్నప్పుడు వీళ్ల శరీరం మీద మందంగల బెల్టులాంటి పట్టీ, ఒక సిల్కుగోచీ తప్ప ఇంకే దుస్తులూ ఉండవు. జుట్టును పొడుగ్గా పెంచుకుని కొప్పుగా తలమీద మధ్యన కట్టుకుంటారు. ఈ ముడి యోధుని క్లాసును బట్టి మారుతుందట.
పోటీలకు ముందు జరిగే తంతు కార్యక్రమమం చాలా విస్తారంగా ఉంటుంది. ముందు వెనుక మనుషులతో, గొప్ప అలంకారాలతో, యోధులు రంగంలోకి ప్రవేశిస్తారు. తర్వాత అదనపు దుస్తులు తీసేస్తారు. కండలు తిప్పుతూ ముందుకు వచ్చి యోధులు ఉప్పును అటూ ఇటూ చల్లుతారు. షింటో పద్ధతిలో అది ప్రదేశాన్ని శుద్ధి చేయడం కింద లెక్క. కొంచెం సేపు ఒకరినొకరు గుడ్లురిమి చూడడం, నీళ్లు తాగడం కూడా పోటీలో భాగమే.
ఇటీవలే యు.కే., యు.ఎస్.ఏ., యూరపు లాంటి దేశాలు కూడా సుమో పట్ల ఆసక్తి కనబరుస్తున్నాయి.
Many things in our country are named with words that do not make much sense to us! If we understand the meaning, perhaps, the naming will be more meaningful for us. When all the usual cars are there, there came vehicles by name Sumo! They are big in size. Usually there are wrestling competitions going on in this world. Mighty people participate in them. Japan has a special kind of wrestling called Sumo. There the participants are big in size!! It is after them that the car is named perhaps!
Sumo is an ancient kind of martial art in Japan. Pushing, pulling and such actions are a part of the play. Never hitting!! Even though most of the wrestling follows the same style, Sumo looks unique in itself. Sumo is the name of the game. Those who participate in it are called Sumotori. It would have been better if the car is also named after them! This is singular and plural word commonly. Their specialty is that they are of big body size starting from 130 Kgs and going almost to 200. They take special food and care to increase the body mass. There is training also for the purpose. There are special schools for the training.
Like the Akhadas of our country for the wrestlers, Japan has 28 specially run Sumobeyas, Experienced wrestlers run them. Youngsters at the age of 15 join there and undergo intense training. While in action these wrestlers have a thick girdle around the waste and a silken modesty piece. No other clothes are there on the body. Hair is grown long and is tied in a special knot at the top of the head. It appears the knot varies with the class of the wrestler.
The action and the rituals before commencement of the bouts is elaborate. Wrestlers arrive with their retinue of followers with full dress and embellishments. After arrival all the additional apparels are removed. Flexing their muscles, the wrestlers come forward and sprinkle salt around, By Shinto custom it amounts to sanctifying the place. Staring at each other, gulping water also is a part of the preamble.
Recently Europe, US, and UK are also evincing interesting in this sport called Sumo!
